Yukon

Yukon at a Glance

Yukon is located directly north of the Canadian province of British Columbia and east of the American state of Alaska.

With a total land mass of approximately 484,000 square kilometres (roughly the size of Spain), Yukon is home to only about 33,000 people, including members of fourteen First Nations. About three-quarters of the population live in the capital city of Whitehorse. The rest are distributed amongst sixteen smaller Yukon communities. Much of the territory’s land mass is covered by mountains, lakes and boreal forest, and is crossed by the Yukon River and many other rivers, streams and creeks. The natural environment, including water bodies and water ways, plays a key role in Yukon’s culture, traditions and economy.

The Yukon economy is in a period of growth, and its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has increased by approximately 3 to 4 % for the past three years. Construction and mining were key growth drivers in 2007. This economic activity is supported by a wide range of industry and business activity, including agriculture, tourism and the service sector. In addition, federal, territorial, First Nation and municipal governments provide significant employment.
